something on the way to somewhere else - Beinn Alligin - Oil On Canvas, 61cm x 50.8cm

Another representation of Alligin. My Grandpa MacDonald is from Alligin, so i can draw on notions of his past family ties and what not… My great Grannies house here is just a pile of rubble distinguished only by the shards of gin bottle that remain. There is a rowan and 360º views to melt your soul.

In the last year or two I have been trying hard to paint differently, using oil paints, actually practicing and studying, sketching. It has resulted in work I am genuinely happy with, feels more reflective of the (surreal) time we are living whilst also tackling odd and abstract subjects. Obviously I understand that most people do not want a cute / grotesque lactating, transgender ,beaver dog on there wall.

I have been trying hard to get back to painting landscape painting, of course a subject very dear to my heart, it’s has proven quite painful for me, as I had quite a well established style previously and breaking the habit of that style is hard. It’s a strange psychological tick doing these landscapes now, because my painting really has moved on a lot from where I was 5 years ago. However my synapses and body remember the old ways subconsciously and sustains these convoluted habits. In the process of creating paintings like these there is a contortion which results in imagery which I find it almost impossible to see. My minds eye is searching for a new way, a future vision… whilst my body and brain continue to revert to patterns that previously brought a fair amount of success. Simply put, I am trying to grow whilst simultaneously being pulled back to processes that were ‘proven to work’. As I work towards an exhibition in the summer I must push through these impediments and find this new thing I am so desperately seeking… I would say this piece is a transitional piece, something on the way to somewhere else… Any how. Thanks for reading this if you did, I feel better for straightening all of this out in words. Hopefully it helps, onwards and sideways.
