Down in One - Oil on Canvas - 61cm x 50.8cm
I was working as a sound engineer in the Corinthian Club over the Winter. The Club is an upscale night club and brasserie set in a very grand Merchants mansion, ex bank. The building really is astonishing and built from the profits of slavery, like most of the other grand building in the area. It attracts a very specific type of clientele. Working long hours meant I had a lot of time when bands were performing to people watch and draw in my sketchbooks. I observed many things during my tenure there and this painting is the only painting I’ve done that seems to encapsulate my experience there. This was actually an attempt at a self portrait but slowly morphed into this blurry impression of a central scotland male, drunk, boorish, coorse and confused. I suppose this is about binge drinking, fragile masculinity and an overarching sexual incompetence hidden behind expensive clothes, shite patter and a cloying need to conform. Bit harsh? definitely drawing parallels with a self portrait…
🥴
This painting in real life really does poses an interesting visual effect, essentially the blurriness is heightened in reality.
