Super-black, golden-silver, gold, fine black gravel and three pieces of Caledonian pine bark that I brought back from a recent trip. This painting looks amazing in the dim light.

The 10,000 year wood on the south bank of Loch Mullardoch had a deer fence put around it in the late seventies, funded and maintained by the European Union. This wood is ‘old-growth’, dating back to the last ice-age. Walking in this place really does transport you to another epoch, very few things are the same as they are lower down the glen. Moss, lichens, trees and bogs; all odd, all magical. And the parasites up there are some of the most veracious I have ever encountered. One of my favourite things to do in the summer is walk to the top of the tree line at 600m and then descend back to the loch via the steep river Allt Fraoch-choire (River of the Heathery Corrie). There are many more remote enclaves of this native landscape to explore but they all have 1000m mountains in the way and will require days to reach. I will go though, when life allows.
