THE LAIRD OF FCKNG NOWHERE
Series Description:
laird /lɛːd/ noun (in Scotland) a person who owns a large estate.
Scotland is experiencing a property crisis, the cost of living is so high and wages so low that few millennials or gen z’ers have any hope of ever finding a permanent home. In the highlands of Scotland (where I come from) the dream of being able to move home is so remote with even derelict buildings often being out of reach financially. In the central belt, where most of the population reside the social housing schemes that were built in the 1960 and 70’s are falling into dis-repair whilst rents remain high, often controlled by unscrupulous corporate landlords. This photo series aims to illustrate this social dystopia by exploring the fringes of place and our sense of belonging. The humans in these pictures may not be instantly recognisable but their stories are hidden in plain sight.
